Hi there, welcome to Body & Soul Online. My name is Rui Carvalho and I will be explaining what you need to know to prepare yourself for any type of physical performance event. Whether you’re doing a 10km run, preparing for a team or individual sport, or even a long hiking trip, some general guidelines can be followed to enhance the preparedness of your body to meet whichever challenge you accept. These guidelines are meant to optimize performance while reducing the risk of injuries.
In this series I will be going over some steps that will incrementally prepare your body physically and psychologically to the demands of the event you are preparing for. The series begins with an analysis of what the task you are preparing for requires and how far you are from those demands in your current state. Once we know what demands will be placed on you and how far you have to go to get into performance shape, we can chart out a course to get you there. We will determine which physical abilities need to be developed and then plan out how to optimize them in the leadup to the event or sport season so that you are able to meet those demands while lowering injury risk.
The following videos will go through these steps in further detail. Let’s get started!

Is there a physical performance event, like a 10km run, or a hiking trip, you are participating in, or want to participate in but are unsure how to prepare your body for it? In the Human Performance series, Rui shares some general guidelines to enhance the preparedness of your body, optimize performance and reduce the risk of injury, to meet whichever challenge you accept.
Rui introduces the process: Task Needs Analysis, which examines what type of physical demands the sport or event you’re preparing for involves. He discusses how you can conduct a task needs analysis specific to your end goal.
Now that you have identified what physical demands your event requires, Rui addresses small goal setting and organizing your training period into two main phases: the preparatory period, and transition period. He explores how to navigate your way through each of these phases to reach your end goal.
Rui unpacks the transition period, and guides you to shift your training focus from the improved fitness to the task specific activities. Essentially, Rui gives you the tools needed to link the preparatory period with the competition or goal task.
