Life Stretch Series Part 3: Upper and Lower Back

Introduction

As a Fascial Stretch Therapy Practitioner , my new clients are always saying to me “my lower back always hurts”.One of the leading causes of general back pain is tight fascia. Humans are designed to move and up until about 100 years ago, we were farmers, tradesmen or had jobs where we moved all day long. With the invention of the car, tv and computers, we became a society that sits to drive,sits to work on a computer all day and then sits to watch tv. With so little movement, how can the fascia surrounding your lower back and hips NOT be tight?

Think of your fascia as this dry old sponge (hold up sponge). Just sitting there all day, notmoving and getting dry and hard. Same as your fascia. Now look at this sponge (hold up newsponge) that we use and move everyday. It is moist, soft and moves really easily. THIS is ourgoal and with that in mind, this session is geared towards….our backs!Grab a chair as we will need this as a prop and also have a wall nearby to secure the chair. Let’s stretch!

Conclusion

Low back pain continues to be one of the largest complaints doctors and physiotherapists hear during their day. As we age we seem to think that these aches and pains are inevitable or a fact of life. Nothing can be further from the truth.
